AI-guided putter fitting. How SAM PuttLab measurement, Claude reasoning and the Quantum Putting method combine to identify, profile, match and tune the club you use more than any other.
A driver gets fitted for loft, lie, shaft, weight and spin. A putter gets picked up in a shop, waggled twice, rolled ten times on a flat mat and taken home. Then it is used on roughly two out of every five shots you play.
Putter fitting works — it is simply rationed. It needs a launch monitor, a trained fitter, a free hour and a drive to a facility that owns the kit. Most golfers never get one. Those who do get a single snapshot: a PDF that ages the moment their stroke changes, and no way to tell whether next season's miss is the stroke or the tool.
So golfers practise around a mismatch. They rebuild a stroke that was compensating for a putter that never suited them, and they buy the next putter the same way they bought the last one.
Quantum Putting closes the gap with a guided fitting that a golfer can start on their own phone, in their own lounge, in five minutes — and that gets sharper the moment real measurement data arrives.
The Quantum Putter Fitting App walks you through photographing and measuring your putter. Claude identifies the make, model, generation and finish, builds a verified spec profile, and turns the measurements into structured data. That profile is paired with your SAM PuttLab export and the SAM fitting-protocol question set, then read against the Quantum matching model. The output is a report that does three jobs:
Every golfer can name the three ways a putter really gets bought. None of them involve the golfer's own data.
Head shape, finish and stamping are aesthetic decisions. They also change aim bias by degrees — and nobody checked yours before you paid.
A putter that suits a 105° arc and a 0.4° face rotation belongs to the player who owns that stroke. Copying the club without the stroke copies nothing.
Ten putts on flat carpet measures novelty, not fit. It has no dispersion, no repeatability, and no record you can return to.
Proper putter fitting is real, and it works. It also requires a launch or motion system, a trained fitter, an appointment, a journey and a fee. The result is a single snapshot, delivered once, in a format nobody revisits.
Three structural failures follow:
A mismatched putter does not announce itself. It hides as a technique fault, and you spend a season coaching a compensation.
The compensation loop: the putter's balance fights your natural arc → you subconsciously manipulate the face to square it → face control becomes inconsistent under pressure → you blame the stroke → you practise harder at the compensation → the stroke gets more idiosyncratic → the next putter is chosen to suit the compensated stroke.
Break the loop at the tool and the practice starts compounding instead of cancelling.
Quantum Putting does not replace measurement or coaching. It connects them — and adds the two things a traditional fitting has never had: an interpreter that is always available, and a memory that never resets.
SAM PuttLab uses ultrasound-based 3D measurement to analyse the 28 most important parameters of the putting stroke, reporting both technique and consistency. It is the reference layer: fitting decisions are made against measured reality, not feel.
Claude identifies the putter from photographs, structures the guided measurements, reads the SAM export and the fitting-protocol answers together, and writes the conclusion in language a golfer can act on — with the evidence attached.
Quantum Putting supplies the matching model, the outcome capture (where the ball actually finishes), the re-test cadence and the tuning ledger — pace, speed and read applied to equipment as well as technique.
The Quantum Putter Fitting App walks you through six photographs — face-on, sole, hosel and neck, grip, stamping and your normal address view. Claude reads them and returns a candidate identification: make, model, generation, head style, neck type, insert and finish. Where confidence is low, it says so, and names the one photo that would settle it.
It then guides the measurements a camera cannot take, one prompt at a time, with a reference object for scale:
The output is a verified spec sheet for the putter you already own — the thing almost no golfer has, and the thing every fitting decision depends on.
Why this matters before you spend an hour on a launch system: a stroke measurement is only interpretable if you know precisely what was in the golfer's hands. Scan first, and the SAM session starts with the club already understood.
SAM PuttLab analyses the 28 most important parameters of the putting stroke using accurate ultrasound 3D measurement, and is the only system that weighs technique and consistency into an individual performance profile. It is the anchor of the method — everything downstream defers to it.
Face aim at address, shoulder and eye alignment, and the aim bias between where you think you are pointed and where you are.
Face angle at impact, rotation through the stroke, path direction and arc, rise angle, and impact spot on the face.
Backswing and forward-swing duration, rhythm ratio, acceleration profile and speed at impact.
Repeatability of every parameter above — the number that separates a good stroke from a reliable one.
Science & Motion's own putting fundamentals put face angle at impact at roughly 83% of initial ball direction — the largest single factor — and note that a face error of about 1° will miss the hole from 4 m when the path is square. Anything in the putter that makes squaring the face harder for your release pattern is not a matter of taste. It is a scoring cost, repeated on two of every five shots.
A stroke report alone is diagnosis. Fitting needs comparison. The SAM fitting protocol structures that: the same golfer, the same conditions, different clubs and specs, measured under controlled repetition so the difference in the numbers means something.
Quantum captures three things at once and stores them against your profile:
Already have a SAM report from a previous session? It attaches to your profile and becomes the first point on your history rather than a document in a drawer.
Matching is not one answer. It is a stack of small, checkable pairings — each traceable to a measured number, each testable against where your ball actually finishes.
| What the data shows | What it usually means | What Quantum changes first |
|---|---|---|
| High face rotation, strong arc, face-balanced head | The head resists your natural release; you square it with hands rather than with the stroke. | Increase toe hang before touching the stroke. Re-test rotation consistency. |
| Consistent aim bias at address | Head shape, alignment aid and eye position are pulling your aim off the intended line. | Head style and alignment aid, then lie and length to reset eye-over-ball. |
| Impact spot drifting toward the toe | Setup distance, lie angle or length are wrong for your posture. | Length and lie — the cheapest change in fitting. Then MOI. |
| Long backswing, decelerating through impact | The head is too light to give your tempo something to swing. | Head weight or counterbalance, then re-measure the rhythm ratio. |
| Everything in range, dispersion already tight | The putter fits. The gain is somewhere else in your game. | Keep it. The report says so and spends your money on nothing. |
Every Quantum fit resolves to one of three verdicts on the putter you already own — considered in this order, because the cheapest fix that works is the right one.
The specs already suit your measured stroke. The report says so, shows the parameters that prove it, and redirects you to the practice that will actually move your numbers.
Length, lie, loft, grip, head weight, counterbalance. A tuning list with the target value, the expected effect and the parameter to re-measure to prove it worked. Most golfers land here.
Only when a spec you cannot change — balance, head style, MOI — is the thing fighting your stroke. Then: a shortlist, the reason for each candidate, the specs to order and the test protocol that confirms it before you commit.
Every candidate putter and every tuning change arrives with a test protocol: the distances, the repetitions and the parameter that has to move for the change to earn its place. Feel is welcome in the room — it just does not get to vote alone.
Recommendations are written as specifications — balance, head style, length, lie, loft, weight, grip — so they can be met by more than one manufacturer, by a custom build, or by tuning something already in your garage.
| Candidate | Why it is on your list |
|---|---|
| Match A mid-mallet · 40° toe hang · 355 g · 33.5″ | Closest to your measured arc and rotation; adds MOI without changing the release you already own. |
| Match B blade · 45° toe hang · 350 g · 33.5″ | Same balance family, lighter feel. Tests whether your tempo prefers less head mass. |
| Control your current putter, tuned | Always tested alongside. If it wins, you keep it — and you know why. |
The control club is the honesty mechanism. A fitting that never tests your existing putter properly can only ever recommend a purchase.
A fitting is a photograph. A fit is a film. Quantum re-tests on a cadence — 30 days after any change, then quarterly, then whenever something feels different — and stamps every change on a ledger you can read backwards.
| Trigger | What happens |
|---|---|
| Any spec change | Re-test in 30 days against the parameter the change was meant to move. |
| Quarterly | Short baseline session; the ledger flags drift beyond your normal range. |
| New putter | Full scan and profile, tested against your current club as the control. |
| Something feels off | Capture dispersion first. The report tells you whether the feeling has a number behind it. |
One document, in plain English, that a golfer can read in four minutes and a fitter can defend line by line.
| ① | Identification. Make, model, generation, neck and finish — with a confidence score and the reason for it. |
| ② | SAM linkage. Your session export and protocol answers attached to this exact putter, so comparisons are like for like. |
| ③ | Verdict. Keep, tune or replace — stated once, at the top, without hedging. |
| ④ | Spec sheet. The measured truth about your putter, portable to any fitter, builder or buyer. |
| ⑤ | Match bars. Each pairing scored, with the measured parameter that drove the score named beneath it. |
| ⑥ | Tune list. Ordered by cost, each with a target, an expected effect and the parameter that proves it. |
| ⑦ | Re-test date. The fitting has a next step built in, not an expiry date. |
| ⑧ | Shortlist. Tailored candidates with specs to order and a protocol to test them — only when the data justifies a change. |
Every line carries its evidence. No recommendation appears in a Quantum report without the measured parameter behind it and a confidence level. If the data is thin, the report says the data is thin — and names the measurement that would make it decisive.
Measurement was never the bottleneck. Interpretation was — and interpretation is exactly what a language model is for, provided it is fenced in by real data and a real fitter.
Credibility in golf is built by being precise about limits. So, plainly:
| We do not say | We do say |
|---|---|
| AI replaces your coach or fitter. | It removes the translation work between them and you, and keeps the record. |
| A photograph alone can fit a putter. | A photograph starts the profile. Measurement decides the fit. |
| A new putter will lower your handicap by a stated number of shots. | A matched putter removes a compensation. What you do with the practice time is yours. |
| Identification is always certain. | Confidence is scored and shown. Low confidence triggers a specific follow-up photograph. |
| The model's opinion outranks the measurement. | Where reasoning and data disagree, the data wins and the report flags the conflict. |
Your putter profile, session data and outcomes belong to you. The report is exportable, portable to any coach or fitter, and the reasoning behind every recommendation is shown rather than buried inside a score.
Golfers accept fitted drivers because the gain shows up on a launch monitor in ninety seconds. Putting gains are quieter and larger. The putter is used on roughly two of every five shots, and the biggest lever on where the ball starts — face angle at impact — is influenced by every spec in the club.
The advantage is not that the technology is exotic. It is that almost nobody applies it to the putter — and the few who do are not tracking it over time. The SAM session stays the anchor; Quantum makes the hour before it and the six months after it count.
Risk reversal, built in. The most common outcome of a Quantum fit is keep your putter and change two specs. A process that will happily tell you to buy nothing is a process worth trusting when it tells you to buy something.
| Traditional route | Quantum route | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Book, travel, wait | Five minutes, at home, tonight |
| Interpretation | Verbal, in the bay, gone by Friday | Written, evidenced, permanent |
| Recommendation | What is in stock | What matches, in cost order |
| Six months later | A PDF nobody opens | A re-test with your history attached |
The method is being built in the open, with the golfers, coaches and fitters using it. The community group is where the protocol gets tested, the app builds get released and the fitting questions get answered — by people doing it, not by a brochure.
Early members shape the fitting protocol, get first access to new app builds, and see their anonymised results feed the matching model that fits the next golfer. No obligation to buy anything — a large share of reports end in keep it.
